When I bought my first car, I was just 21 years old.
It was a Citroën 2 CV (= deux CheVeaux, French for = two horses)
In Holland also called "UGLY DUCK"
I just had moved with my parents from Abcoude,
a village very near by Amsterdam, to the village Huizen.
I had finished my study and worked already at a school in Utrecht.
You can understand that I left all my friends in Abcoude.
On friday evening I used to sing in a Christian Youth Choir,
on saterday we met each other ( many boys and girls) in a pub
or went to the cinema, or one of them gave a party for his/her
birthday. Sometimes on sunday we went to walk or rowe or
swim at the lakes round Abcoude. When it was bad weather
we were home at one of the group, just talking and listening
music. We always were together with many boys and girls
from the Protestant Church. It was a great time.
By bus it was a worldtrip to Abcoude, the connection between
the 2 villages was not very good and although most of the time
one of the boys with a car was so kind to bring me home, I was
very helped with my car, cause I didn't like it to be dependent.
So from that time in the weekends I drove in my Citroën 2CV
to Abcoude and in the night back home.
The last was something my parents didn't like: a girl/young
woman alone on the road at that hour. My mother told me, that
the "Road Service" was only active untill midnight and I believed
her; my father gave me the suggestion to wear a hat ot cap
while driving, that would gave me the look like a male driver!
I never did.
I also never was a scaring girl, but from that moment I was not
so sure anymore all the time.
So in my opinion, it was not wise of my parents, to warn me at that way.
My first one was red and fury !! A few years later a new one in sky blue !
